Introduction
The
Plymouth & District Egyptology Society (PADES) is a small friendly group of
people who share an interest in all aspects of life in Ancient Egypt. The
Society started in 1999 and has enjoyed growing membership over the last few
years. The Society currently has about 50 members who come from all over Devon
& Cornwall.
We normally meet on the first Saturday of each month from September to April
(please see our programme pages). We also aim to have one or more day schools a
year. Members receive three issues a year of the society journal The Pades
Papyrus. The society also has a
discussion group. Members enjoy visits to locations both within the UK and
abroad as well as social events. Past visits have included museums in Paris,
Berlin, Turin and Leiden and in 2004 twelve members travelled together to attend
the Luxor Conference in Egypt. Many members are regular visitors to Egypt.
At present we meet for Saturday afternoon lectures in the Swarthmore Hall,
Mutley Plain, Plymouth and hold days schools at the Mountbatten Water Sports
Centre, Mountbatten, Plymstock, Plymouth.
We extend a warm welcome to any visitor or new members at our lectures and day
schools.
The society has been fortunate to have had some of Egyptology’s leading
members lecture to us. Past lecturers have included Professor Ken Kitchen, Dr.
Aidan Dodson, Alison Roberts, Professor Valerie Maxfield, Dr. Robert Morcot,
Lucia Gahlin, Penny Wilson, Ian Mathieson, Professor Alan Lloyd, and Christine
el-Mahdy. We have also held four very successful day schools with Joyce
Tyldesley and Stephen Snape; David Rohl; Professor Jan and Rosalind Jansen, and;
Robert Partridge and Peter Phillips.
